Distance 7.9 miles
Height Gained 1250
Difficulty Easy to Moderate
Weather Very cold, overcast.
When I started out I intended to walk to Sandsend tunnel and back but once I got into my stride I decided to go on to Runswick Bay instead. It was quite cold and what wind there was blew in my favour so I was reasonably comfortable. As I approached the rail tunnel at Sandsend I was overtaken by a fleet of 4X4s, the first time that I have ever seen a vehicle along here. It turned out to be a party of blokes out for a day murdering grouse. Judging by the amount of ammunition I saw in the back if one of the vehicles they must have been expecting a busy day.
A few minutes later I could hear beaters whistling and shouting as they were coming along Overdale towards us and I was amazed at how many grouse they put up.
I was expecting it to be sticky once I got on the top of the cliff but it was actually quite reasonable underfoot, the path had started to dry on the surface and there were areas that were frozen hard. The only awkward part was the stairway dawn to the beach was slippery at the bottom and a little more water than usual in the stream but I was soon on the beach and a few minutes later I was trudging up Runswick Bank to catch my bus home.
