Distance 42 miles
Climbing 302 ft
Difficulty. Easy to moderate due to wind.
Weather Bright intervals with breeze
Company John & Colin
On the second day of our break we had decided on riding to Spurn Head and back by way of the A1033 & B1445 to Easington and then along u/c lanes to Kilnsea & along to Spurn Head. Colin had family commitments so he rode with us for the first hour before returning home. After the Whitby area there was something surreal about the absence of any hills and we made excellent time along level roads which were surprisingly quiet. Colin left us after an hour as arranged and John and I carried on to the nature reserve at Spurn. From there the road was little more than a narrow lane with an inch or two of sand covering it and after a short distance we came to a point where the dunes had been breached by the sea taking the road with it. After discussing the situation we walked the bikes down to the foreshore and along the tide line for half a mile or so but then decided not take them any further because the were picking up sand and we didn’t want to damage the bearings etc so we left them behind and walked a little further along the beach before deciding to make our way back. Once back at the lane we spoke with a lady who told us if we had gone only a little further we would have found the continuation of the lane all the way to the Point so we will perhaps do that some other time.
Our ride back to Burstwick was surprisingly hard work; we had a head wind all the way which although not much more than a breeze, was constant. However the traffic remained fairly light and we were soon back having had another enjoyable ride out in what to us was novel surroundings.
