Castleton Westerdale circuit 7/2/18
Distance 8.5 miles
Total Ascent 2324 ft
Weather Sunny, cold but calm
Difficulty Mostly very easy
Our group, the 'OGRES' (Old Gits Rambling Expeditions) met for the first time this year for a walk from Castleton to Westerdale, taking in the North York Moors latest landmark, 'The Seated Man', although most people that I know refer to it as The 'Old Man of the Moors'.
It was bright but cold day with a thin covering of snow which was just enough to enhance the scenery. We left Castleton at around 11:15 and made our way to Castleton Rigg by way of Danby Dale and then up to the Old Man where we stopped for photos and a spot of lunch before descending into Westerdale and back to Castleton by way of Westerdale Moor.

Boggle Hole circuit 30/6/18
Distance 19.6 miles
Total Ascent 1585 ft
Weather Hot & sunny
Difficulty Easy to Moderate
Today's route took me from Whitby, following the Cleveland Way as far as Robin Hoods Bay, where after a spot of lunch I descended to a very crowded beach. It was so warm that you could see mist rising from the wet sand as the moisture evaporated but it was still much cooler than walking the cliff tops had been and the half mile along to Boggle Hole was quite pleasant. On the downside, once I arrived at Boggle Hole, there was a 'nasty niff' in the air coming from piles of decomposing seaweed which was also attracting hoards of flies. After stopping for coffee & cake at the Youth Hostel I followed the lane to a point where I could access the Cinder Track where I found the walking much cooler because of the shelter afforded by the trees for much of its length. I arrived home, footsore & weary after about six hours. This has been my longest walk for almost a year and it made me realise that I have lost some of my former fitness.

Gnipe Howe walk 29/10/18
Distance 10.2 miles
Total Ascent 710.5
Weather Bright, cool, breezy
Difficulty Easy
After a few days of poor weather I was starting to suffer from 'cabin fever' and decided that it was time to get out of the house for a few hours to work the stiffness out of my bones. I didn't plan a route, I just picked up my camera and walked. Similar photos are found elsewhere in this site but There is only a limited number of things to photograph on a comparatively short walk.
