Yesterday was one of the wettest days that we have had for some time now but this morning, the rain had stopped and the wind had fallen away, the only problem was a bit of fog hanging around. I decided to take the oportunity to go out and do 20 miles or so as part of my preperations for the C2C. I thought that a run down to Littlebeck and possibly on to Grosmont would be good so off I went. I decided that I would take the Old Railway to Stainsacre but I wasn't prepared for the potholes which have suddenly appeared and the areas where the surface has been washes away in places. From Stainsacre I took the back lane towards Hawsker and that was not a lot better in places, with mud and standing water all over the place. on the descent down Lousy Hill Lane into Littlebeck there was what I can only describe as a beach spread across the road and in one part, a tree had fallen and the only way past was to enter a field and wade through mud to get past. In Littlebeck itself the ford was in flood to a depth of a couple of feet or so which made it impassable for an old fart on a bike so i had to go a little way downstream to the footbridge. the road out of Littlebeck was like a river flowing downhill with sand and mud very much in evidence. I enjoyed the downhill run on Blue Bank and down through Sleights reaching almost 50mph at one point, but as soon as I started along the Carrs to Ruswarp I was pedalling through liquid mud. As I said in the title of this post, it was Interesting.
