Route Railway, Beacon Howe, Ravenscar, & Return Distance 23.6 Miles Difficulty Easy Weather Bright & Breezy Company Solo My ride today was from Whitby to Ravenscar along the old Scarborough to Whitby railway line (the Cinder Track) as far as Browside Farm where I took the lane which eventually climbs up to the radio mast on Beacon Howe. This was the only hard climb of the day as I gained about 550 ft in 1.5 miles. After a steady whiz down to Ravenscar I felt in need of some refreshment so I called at the Tea Rooms near the Old Station & had a flapjack with some hot chocolate before continuing on my way home. One thing I noticed was that there were quite a few people out, many of them were genuine ramblers, but there was also a lot more grumpy towny's than usual. Route Dunsley, Broome House Lane, Lythe, Kettleness, return via Sandsend.
Distance 7.7 Miles Difficulty Easy to Moderate. Weather Bright but breezy. Company, Mal & Adrian This was a steady ride on a pleasant autumn morning. we were buffeted by the breeze at times and for much of the time the road surface was was a little slippery due to wet leaves and some muddy patches here and there. Because of this, I for one descended any hills at a more sedate pace than usual, even Lythe Bank was treated with respect as I was braking all the way down. Route Aislaby, Egton, Ugthorpe, Lythe
Distance 18.3 Miles Difficulty Easy Weather Mild with a threat of rain at first Company, John. A gentle potter around one of our favourite circuits to ease tight muscles after yesterdays walk. One thing of interest was that as we were sitting at Sandsend, I guy on an old 80s road bike, fitted with a pannier frame and fully laden passed by. As he passed he called out, but neither John or myself caught what he said, but we noticed that he had a foreign accent. A few minutes later we we set of for the last couple of miles to Whitby. When we reached the 'Love Lane' roundabout we saw the same guy trying to ask a chap something but there was a definite lack of understanding somewhere. We stopped and the cyclist asked us how to get onto the Cycle route to Scarborough. because of the language barrier etc it was easier to show him the way and this we did. Before parting company I asked him where he was from and where was he going. It turned out that he was a Spaniard cycling from Edinburgh to Barcelona. When I got home I checked what his mileage would be and it came to around 1400 miles. Route Grosmont - Goathland - Grosmont Distance 23.3 miles Difficulty Moderate with stiff climbs. Weather Mild & Sunny. Company Mal, John, Brian. John, Mal and myself left our meeting place at Stakesby Terminus at about 1330 and set out for a ride to Goathland. The weather had picked up quite a lot from the previous day when John and I had set out for a training ride, we finished up sat in a bus shelter for twenty minutes or so waiting for the rain to stop before calling it a day and going home. A few minutes after setting out we were riding along Barker Lane when another cyclist caught up with us and simply joined our group, after introductions all round we discovered that his name was Brian and like Mal and myself, he lives in Whitby. As we rode along there was the usual abuse passed back and forth so I don't know what Brian thought about us. When we reached Grosmont we crossed the Esk using the narrow footbridge by the ford before tackling the stiff climb up Lease Rigg and then along the wonderfully named 'Randy Rigg' towards Goathland where John had a visit from the puncture fairy. I was not too upset about this because it gave me a chance to catch my wind. Brian had to leave us here because of work commitments, but hopefully we will see him again sometime. Once the P*")*:@ was repaired we were on our way again, through Goathland and Beck Hole to Grosmont where we were faced with another hard climb up to Eskdaleside. By now John's superior fitness was becoming more evident as Mal and myself plodded along after him as he vanished into the distance. What he needs is a few pints of ale and a good portion of something really fattening to slow him down a bit. After the next big(ish) climb up Ruswarp bank Mal turned off for home and John and I continued on our way. after yet another great ride out. Route Aislaby Egton Lealholme road end & return
Distance 19.5 Difficulty Easy Weather Overcast and a bit damp to start but improved later. Quite breezy. Company Mal We had planned to set out for this ride at 0915 but unfortunately the weather was against us so we put it off until later It was a pleasant ride although we were pushed around by the wind at times and the road surface could have been better. There was lots of leaves in the edges and it made for some slippery corners. Route Egton, Ugthorpe, Lythe
Distance 18.5 Miles Difficulty Mainly easy Weather Bright with a fresh breeze Company John This was my first ride out with John for a couple of weeks and I was disappointed to find that I am still struggling to keep up with him at times, perhaps its the difference in the bikes or maybe I am not as fit as I would wish. It was once again, a pleasant ride although the strong breeze made us work a little harder at times. As we were approaching Lythe we caught up and passed three other cyclists before dropping down Lythe Bank to Sandsend. Calais House via Egton, Return via Sandsend
Distance 20.5 Miles Difficulty Easy Weather Mild & Sunny Company Solo I set out today to simply do the 'Ugthorpe' Circuit but once on the the main road, instead of turning off for Ugthorpe I continued for another mile or two to Calaise House junction where I turned right and made my way back home via the coast road. I actually added a couple of miles to the trip but my average speed was a little higher. There was a little traffic, but nothing too drastic. Route Aislaby, Egton, Lealholme Road End.
Distance 19.4 Miles Difficulty East to Moderate. Weather Misty but mild. Company Mal & Adrian. The weather is definitely becoming Autumnal now. The leaves are starting to fall and the Autumn colours are becoming more evident. After a few wet days the roads today were were wet and in places a little muddy, which was not what I wanted having just cleaned and polished the bike. I suppose there will be some dirty roads to contend with from now until the spring. Route Dunsley, Skelder, Briggswath Larpool, Khyber Pass.
Distance 12.8 Difficulty Easy Weather Bloody windy Company Solo The weather at the moment has turned very autumnal, lots of rain and plenty of wind. 14/10/2013 Route etc Same as above only there is a lot more wet stuff falling |
