Distance 19.2 miles Climbing 1358 ft Weather Overcast Difficulty Easy Trek 8.1ds I bought this to replace my old Zimmer which is now well past its sell by date. I found it to be a lot more responsive than the old bike but oh dear! the saddle. After one ride out my bum was numb. I have replaced it (the saddle, not my bum) with my old 50 year old Brooks so we will see how that goes. I must fit some mudguards too. Distance 23.8 miles Climbing 1830 ft Difficulty Easy Weather Overcast, cool and a hint of rain Company Mal I thought that we would be prevented from going out this morning because of the weather. About an hour before we were due to meet it started to really pour down but it eased off a few minutes before I was due to meet Mal. As expected some of the lanes were covered in muck after the downpour but we still enjoyed our outing. Distance 19.2
Climbing 1370 ft Difficulty John says easier for some (OK John?) Weather Overcast but quite mild Company John Leeman. When John and I were next door neighbours it became the custom for us to take a twenty mile ride each Sunday morning. this was usually over the same route and almost always at a leisurely pace. Unfortunately for some time now John has been unable to find the time and this morning was our first outing together for about 10 months. We followed the same rout as usual, that is to say we passed through Aislaby, Egton, Ugthorpe & Lythe. We were passed by a large group of cyclists at Egton which I think was probably the largest that I have seen for a number of years, other than that and the occasional car, we had the roads to ourselves. Climbing 2023 ft Difficulty Easy but with a long climb for several miles Weather Overcast Company Mal Our route took us down to Ruswarp where we were faced with the climb up Oakley Bank on the B1416. We turned of at the Sneatonthorpe junction and then took Raikes Lane to Soulsgrave where we rejoined the main road and turned right to Red Gates and Ma Becks before following the Forest track to Louven Howe. Louven Howe of course is a bronze age burial mound and is surmounted by the stump of an old stone cross thought to have been erected to commemorate the wedding of Henry 1 of England to his second wife, Adeliza de Louvain in 1121. The cros was one of about 30 in the area which were destroyed by the puritans in around 1655. Only a few yards away is an ordnance trig point erected much more recently. There is a local legend that a pot of gold is buried in the Howe and is guarded by a Hag Worm (a large adder) so be warned. Our rout home was more or less the same as ride out with the exeption of the Soulsgrave diversion. Distance 23.9 miles Height Gained 1937 ft Difficulty Easy to moderate. Weather Bright, breezy & cool Company Mal Route;- Newholme, Dunsley, Ugthorpe, Stonegate, Egton, Aislaby We had not planned to ride today but Mal was released from home duties so after a slightly later time than usual for us we started out for one of our usual routes. The weather was typical for March, bright & breezy but a little bit on the cool side and as always, it was directly against us. There has been very little rain for a couple of weeks now so we had the pleasure of riding along country lanes that were dry and clear of mud and debris etc. It was rather slow going as far as Ugthorpe due to the head wind but once we turned towards Stonegate we were flying along the more level stretches and even the hills did not present much of an obstacle. Once we got onto Aislabyside between Egton and Aislaby we were free-wheeling for about 70% of the time with only the last uphill stretch into the village needing any effort at all . We were a little unhappy when we joined the A171 for a short distance, we were riding directly into what would normally be regarded as a glorious sunset, but on this occasion we were almost completely blinded by it and presumably, so were the vehicles overtaking us making us both feel very vulnerable indeed. Once we had turned off the main road were a lot happier and finished the last stretch of the ride in no time at all.
